We harvest 6,000+ bales of hay and straw per year. We primarily focus on an alfalfa/grass mix since it is the most requested hay by horse owners. We typically get four cuttings per year and price our hay according to quality. The cheapest cuttings are always the first cutting since it tends to have more grass as part of the mix and is usually more mature. The second thru fourth cutting will have more alfalfa in the mix and is more fine stemmed. One of the most difficult parts of making alfalfa hay is preserving the leaves through the harvest process. Since much of the nutrition is in the leaf, we use a few harvest techniques to maximum leaf retention in the bale.
